Synesthetic perception as continuous with ordinary perception, or: We're all synesthetes now

چکیده
How we understand the relationship between synesthetic and normal perception depends both on how we conceive of synesthetic perception and normal perception. In this paper I’ll argue that, given what we know about both, the most plausible view is that synesthesia is not a fundamentally distinct, pathological outlier relative to normal perception; rather, it is best understood as continuous with capacities present in normal

Synesthesia is a neurological phenomenon in which certain types of stimuli elicit involuntary perceptions in an unrelated pathway. A common type of synesthesia is grapheme-color synesthesia, in which the visual perception of letters and numbers stimulates the perception of a specific color. Previous studies have often collected relatively small numbers of grapheme-color associations per synesth...

Synesthesia is a phenomenon in which particular stimuli, such as letters or sound, generate a secondary sensory experience in particular individuals. Reports of enhanced memory in synesthetes raise the question of its cognitive and neurological substrates. Enhanced memory in synesthetes could arise from the explicit or implicit use of a synesthetic cue to aid memory, from changes unique to the ...

Grapheme-color synesthesia is an atypical condition in which individuals experience sensations of color when reading printed graphemes such as letters and digits. For some grapheme-color synesthetes, seeing a printed grapheme triggers a sensation of color, but hearing the name of a grapheme does not. This dissociation allowed us to compare the precision with which synesthetes are able to match ...

1 Introduction Synesthesia, which literally means a mixing of the senses, takes on various forms, but the most common is the experience of color when viewing achromatic alphanumeric characters (Day 2005; Rich and Mattingley 2002). Called`color-graphemic synesthesia', this condition has attracted great interest recently, in part because of its potential implications for understanding neural plas...
